Carolyn Signe Gibson, 67, died on July 1 at Kavanaugh House from lymphoma, a blood cancer. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 5 at 10 a.m. at Ashworth Road Baptist Church in West Des Moines. Visitation will be on Sunday, July 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. also at Ashworth Road Baptist Church.

Carolyn was born and raised on a farm in Ferndale, Washington with nine brothers and sisters. Her mother called her "sunshine." She embodied the warmth and radiance of the sun, even as a little girl. She graduated from Ferndale High School in 1961. She navigated to Bethel College in Minnesota after high school, where she met, and later, married Duane J. Gibson. She completed her education at the University of Washington 1965 with a degree in physical therapy. She was a dedicated pediatric physical therapist for over 40 years, retiring from Heartland Area Education Agency in Johnston in 2005. She served many children with disabilities and their families with love and dedication, and was actively involved in the American Physical Therapy Association and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Carolyn also supported her husband, Rev. Duane J. Gibson (who passed away earlier this year, also from cancer), in his many years as a pastor in Michigan, Ohio, and Iowa. Together, they loved and served for over 20 years at First Baptist Church, Des Moines (now in Johnston). Carolyn enjoyed singing in the choir and developing deep friendships with members of her church family.

Carolyn was the mother of Eric (Jenny) Rainey-Gibson of Clive, IA, Bryan (Jennifer) Gibson of West Des Moines, IA, and Michelle (Mike) Kessler of Ames, IA. She was a wonderful mother, demonstrating amazing stamina in keeping up with her three active kids, while exuding a calm and graceful spirit. She was supportive of all their pursuits and passions—encouraging and challenging them to be all God created them to be. Carolyn's passions in life were her family, especially her nine grandchildren, Elijah, Jarret, and Jorja Rainey-Gibson; Christopher, Brayden, and Bryanna Gibson; and Ethan, Kara, and Caleb Kessler.

Carolyn possessed a deep and unshakable passion for the Lord Jesus Christ. During a difficult two-year battle with cancer, Carolyn leaned on, and trusted in the Lord to sustain her and bring her peace.

Carolyn is survived by her three children; nine grandchildren; siblings Eleanor Berg, Gwen Brown, Marie Weltz, Rod Erickson, Harriet Allard, Joan Chittick, Jim Erickson, and Barbara Hime; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Duane; parents, Signe (Erickson) Berg, and Harold Erickson; and brother, Harold (Eric) Erickson.
