"The Janesville Daily Gazette", Janesville, Wisconsin, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1959, p 1.
The body of Robert F. Arnold, 39, 636 S. Garfield Ave., was found slumped behind the wheel of his parked car east of Janesville Tuesday evening, dead of a self-inflicted shotgun wound. A World War II Air Force veteran, he had been employed as a commission gasoline truck driver.
Relatives indicated he had been despondent over recent unemployment and his divorce nearly a year ago from his wife, Marie.
Coroner Richard McCaul, Beloit, learned from a relative that the car had been seen parked just off County Trunk A in a field nearly a mile east of Milton-Emerald Grove road Monday noon. The car was in a lane on the Frederick Baker property. The coroner indicated that death may have occurred Monday noon and said he was attempting to decipher an almost illegible suicide note which may have been written after the 12-gauge shotgun was fired. The charge of shot struck in the left side of the chest.
Deputies said the gun was propped up in Arnold's lap, with the butt against the floor, when found. Kenneth Short, Arnold's brother-in-law, saw the car Tuesday evening and investigated. After finding the body he called the sheriff.
The son of Frank H. and Thursie Brown Arnold, he was born in Johnstown Township July 5, 1920. He was graduated from Janesville High School in 1939 and served in the Air Force four years during World War II.
Mr. Arnold was a commission truck driver for Mobile Oil Co. for the past seven years. He was a member of St. John Vianney Church and the American Legion.
Surviving are two sons, Leland and Dean; three daughters, Monica, Debra and Becky; his father, Frank H. Arnold, Janesville; four brothers, George H. and James R., both of Avalon, Rte. 1, Emmett R. and Forrest H.
