The Port Arthur News, Port Arthur, Texas, "Earl J. Andrus Succumbs Here: Gate Watchman At Gulf Dies Suddenly", Monday, December 30, 1935, p. 2:
Earl J. (Shorty) Andrus, 73, 336-1/2 Austin avenue, gate watchman at the Gulf Refining company for the past 20 years, died suddenly from a stroke at 5:30 a.m. today at his home.
Mr. Andrus apparently had been in good health, despite his years, and was preparing to go to work. He had not absented himself from his job because of illness. He was found dead by his wife. Justice of the Peace L. S. McGuire returned an inquest verdict of death due to natural causes.
Mr. Andrus, a native of Norfolk, Va., had lived in Port Arthur since his employment with the Gulf company. Prior to his residence here he had lived in Opelousas and New Orleans for approximately 30 years.
Arrangements for the funeral under the direction of Grammier's will be announced later.
Survivor's are: his wife, Mrs. E. J. Andrus; five daughters, Mrs. K. Messer, Mrs. Eugene De Frates, Mrs. Emma De Frates, all of Port Arthur, Mrs. Tom Jennings of Monroe, La., and Mrs. J. C. Daniel of Long Beach, Cal.; two sons, Robert and George Andrus, of Port Arthur; one sister, Miss May Graham, of New Orleans, La.; one brother, Ely Andrus, of New Orleans, La.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Andrus will be held at Grammier's chapel, with Rev. Guy H. Wilson, pastor of the First M. E. church, south officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery. The time of the funeral will be set upon word from relatives.
