Terry L. Gettings
ODESSA - Odessa Police Corporal Terry L. Gettings, 54, went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born July 16, 1947, in New Castle, Pa., to Robert Lee Gettings and Myrtle Irene Gettings.
Prior to his law enforcement career, Terry served in the United States Navy from March 1966 through February 1970. He worked in law enforcement for more than 28 years. He started his career in 1973 with the Clark, Pa., Police Department. While living in Pennsylvania, he also served with Pennsylvania State Constable's Office and as a lieutenant and acting chief of police with the Union Township, Pa., Police Department.
Terry began his career with the Odessa Police Department on Oct. 8, 1984. During his time with the OPD, he served as patrol officer, detective with the Crime Stoppers program, field training officer and was the crime prevention officer at the time of his death. Terry was an active member of the department's Honor Guard and Color Guard from 1990 until his death. He served as co-coordinator of the Odessa Citizens Police Academy and as the back up media relations officer for several years.
He was a longtime member of the Texas Narcotic Officers Association and had served as the West Texas Region vice-president from 1996 to 2000. Terry was involved in the Texas Special Olympics for more than 17 years, and the last several years he participated in the Texas Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run.
He was an active member of Temple Baptist Church in Odessa.
Terry had assisted in the Police Athletic League (PAL) youth program for the past eight years. Often, he would opt to take his lunch break with the PAL children because he wanted to be a positive influence in their lives.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Temple Baptist Church with the Odessa Police Chaplain, the Rev. Kyle Rogers, and Commander John Blanco, acting chief of police, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in New Castle, Pa. Local funeral arrangements under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Myrtle Irene Gettings.
He is survived by his daughter, Erica Lee Gettings; son, Robert Lee Gettings; father, Robert Lee Gettings; and sister, Dedra Ann Gettings, all of New Castle, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Texas Special Olympics, the Odessa Police Athletic League (PAL) or the American Cancer Society.
