OLIVER ASHLEY was born in Westfield, MA on Sep 15, 1725. "He published marriage intention 13 May 1749 in Westfield with Abigail Noble. He went from Westfield to Deerfield upon a Larrum under Col. Stoddard to go to Hoosuck May 27 and 28 (1747), when Hoosuck was rebuilding and was sacked by the Enemy." Mass. Arch., vol. 73. p. 84.
"He lived on a farm in the eastern part of Westfield until the spring of 1752, (he and his wife were recommended by the church in Westfield to the church in Sheffield 17 May 1752) when he removed to Sheffield, where his father held land under the Housatonic grant. That year his father deeded him a piece of land and an interest in a sawmill in the recently settled town of Pittsfield, MA. He removed to Pittsfield in 1760, at which time he sold his house in Westfield to his brother Simeon. He and his wife joined the church there in 1764. He lived near his younger brother David in the west part of the town.
He had returned with is family to Sheffield in 1771 or 1772. He probably lived on Taconic Mountain, the range west of Sheffield, and passed the rest of his life in that town. He styled himself "husbandman." Administration was granted on the estate of "Oliver Ashley of Sheffield" 28 Dec. 1792 to his widow Abigail. (Berks. Co. Prob. Rec., file 1592).
