Thomas Monroe "Roe" Bales was a son of Allen Caleb and Emily Jane (Starbuck) Bales. He was a skilled mason, and his home, which still stands on US 40 shows his skilled stonework. He married 10 Apr 1883 Minnie Tryphosa Henderson, and they were the parents of a son Harry Henderson Bales.

Funeral services for Thomas Monroe Bales, 91 years old, retired manufacturer and inventor, who died Monday morning at 9 o'clock at his home in Mount Auburn, will be held at the residence at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Mr. Schidler of Cambridge City will officiate and burial will be in Riverside cemetery at Cambridge City.
Mr. Bales was known throughout the community as a trainer of bird dogs. Survivors are a son, Harry, with whom he lived; a granddaughter, Anita Bales, and several nieces and nephews.
He was born in Gilford (sic) county, N. C., and resided in this vicinity for 49 years. He went to Rush county in 1861 and lived a short time at Raysville, Ind., before moving to Dublin."
