Vernon Brinkmeyer, 74, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 23, 2008 at the Heritage Healthcare Center in Chanute, Kansas.

He was born on August 26, 1933 on the family farm northeast of Chanute, Kansas, to Edward and Merle (Weaver) Brinkmeyer.

He was a lifelong resident of Chanute.

He graduated from Chanute High School in 1951. He graduated from Chanute Junior College in 1958.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1954 and for 2 years following active duty served in the Air Force Reserves receiving his Honorable Discharge in November 1957.

He married Jane Cordner on August 26, 1966.

Vernon was employed as a brakeman and conductor for the Santa Fe Railroad. He served as the trainmen's Local Chairman of the UTU #441 from 1975 until his retirement from the railroad in 1990.

He was a member of VFW Post 1654 serving as Commander in 1992-1993 and a life member of the American Legion. He was a member and elder of the First Christian Church of Chanute.

Survivors include his wife Jane of Chanute, KS; two sons, Ed Brinkmeyer and wife Deni of Overland Park, KS, and Kurt Brinkmeyer and wife Linda of Pittsburg, KS; one sister, Jacque Cannon of Madison, WI; one sister-in-law, Nadine (Brinkmeyer) Burghart of Chanute, KS; five grandchildren, Zach Brinkmeyer and wife Brandy of Savonburg, KS, Leslie Brinkmeyer of Overland Park, KS, and Christine, Alisha, and Jill Brinkmeyer, all of Pittsburg, KS; and three great-grandchildren, Shaylea Brinkmeyer of Savonburg, KS, and Davis and Alyssa Brinkmeyer, both of Pittsburg, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Collis, Warren, Dwight and Bill Brinkmeyer.

Funeral services will be held February 27, 2008 at the First Christian Church in Chanute. Burial with military honors will be at Neosho County Memorial Park Cemetery (Greenlawn Cemetery) on west 21st in Chanute, Kansas.

Memorials in his name may be made to the First Christian Church.
