Theophilus Goin was born Oct 1833 in Madison county, Kentucky the son of John Goin and his wife, Rhoda Vincent Goin. He married Mary Harper on Feb. 14 1858 in Iowa. She died before 1870 in Iowa. The fate of son John Talbert, born about 1861, is unknown. He came to Leesburg, Kansas some time between 1870 and 1880 with their children Rosannah (also known as Emma Rose), James Elmer and Gertrude A (known as Minnie). His mother Rhoda and sister Mary were also a part of the family's household. The 1880 Census lists him as a grocer, and as he lived very close to the general store in Leesburg, we may assume he worked there or perhaps was the proprietor.
During the war of the rebellion, he joined Company G, Iowa 30th Volunteer Regiment as a private where he served as a nurse. The end of one finger was shot off in action at Walnut Hill near Vicksburg, Mississippi. He mustered in Sept. 14, 1862 and mustered out June 5, 1863.
He died at the home of his daughter, Emma Rose (Mrs. Robert Clinkscales). His funeral services on Monday at the Leesburg church were conducted by Rev. Barton, pastor of the Stafford Baptist church. The Stafford cornet band was in attendence.
