John was born in Montreal where his father was stationed with England's Royal Artillery. Follow his father's discharge the family relocated to London, Ontario, Canada. He married Martha Jane Hope on Nov. 24, 1874 and the couple moved to Kansas where John farmed 80 acres not far from this cemetery. The couple had three children, William Hope(1875), Mary Jane (1877) and John Lardner Jr. (1880).
