When one of the howitzers of the artillery battery of which Gunnery Sergeant DAVIDSON was a member received a direct hit during intense enemy counter-battery fire, and a serious ammunition blaze resulted, with complete disregard for his own safety, he took a major part in extinguishing the fire, and assisted in unloading the howitzer which was in danger of exploding because of the intense heat. His great courage, initiative and coolness under fire was a continuation of the high standard of the service demonstrated by him at TARAWA, SAIPAN, and GUAM and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United Staes Naval Services."
