Martha Iola was born May 19, 1895 to Richard swan Sanderson and Martha Nelson Sanderson in Bloomington ID.
She ws the oldest living girl and the fifth of nine children. Her family moved to Freedom while she was very young. It was in the Freedom area that she received her education, mostly in one-room school houses where one teacher taught all grades.
She married John H. Ashment on June 19, 1913 at Freedom, WY. Their marriage was later solemnied in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on May 31, 1951.
After her marriage she and her husband homesteaded a piece of land four miles northeast of Etna. The land was covered with trees and sage brush which she helped remove so the land could be plowed and planted. Together they also cut and hauled logs from which lumber was sawed and used to build their first home.
In 1922 she and her family moved to Etna so that her children could attend school. Iola lived on the farm until her husband passed away in 1961. She then moved to Afton where she lived with her daughter until her death.
Iola loved to dance, hike in the hills, and travel. She was an excellent seamstress and did sewing for people throughout the valley.
She was active in the LDS Church and held various positions including Primary counselor, secretary of the Relief Society, teacher and president of the YWMIA. She loved having members of her family around and was always proud of their achievements.
She is survived by her daughter Velda Garrett, Afton, two granddaughters, three grandsons, 16 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, one sister, Mrs Thetta Ivie, Afton.
