Sarah K. Besancon Jensen, 83, Hiawatha, KS, formerly of Lancaster, KS, died January 8, 2012 at the Highland Healthcare and Rehab in Highland, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, January 13, 2012 at the Lancaster United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Lancaster Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 PM Thursday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorials in honor of Sarah may be made to the Lancaster United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Sarah was born January 6, 1929 in Atchison, KS the daughter of the late William G. and Clara C. (Stutz) Cormode. She attended Cain Grade School and graduated from ACCHS in 1946. Sarah had worked as a Clerk and Bookkeeper for the Snowden Lumber Company in Lancaster from 1946-1959 and then began working at the Lancaster Post Office from 1959-1989 where she eventually retired as the Postmaster. She was a very active member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church, serving on the Administrative Council, Memorial Board, as Church Board Secretary, a Sunday school teacher and the Lancaster United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the 20th Century Club, Club leader for Shannon 4-H, Monrovia Road Sunshine Club and the area representative for the Christian Women's Club of America. Sarah enjoyed farming alongside her husband, Melvin, and they were awarded the Soil Conservation Bankers Award in 2000 and had also received the Family Farm Award for keeping their farm in the family for over 100 years. Sarah was a very kind person who will be remembered for always putting other people before herself.
Sarah and Melvin Besancon were united in marriage on August 29, 1948 at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Effingham, KS. Melvin preceded her in death on February 19, 2000. She later married Kenneth Jensen and he also preceded her in death on November 12, 2010.
Survivors include a daughter, Becky (Greg) Buser, Hiawatha, KS; sister, Wilma Hawk, Sabetha, KS; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Kuhnert, Atchison, KS; grandsons, Andrew R. Buser and Curtis M. Buser, both of Hiawatha, KS and several nieces and nephews.
