Thomas J. Buford represented Giles County in the State House; 28th and 30th General Assemblies, 1849-51, 1853-55. He was a Democrat. He was the son of James and Mary Polly (Giddens) Buford. The extent of his schooling is not determined. He first married 6 AUG 1839, cousin Mary Buford, daughter of Spencer Buford. He married second Mary Ann Gordon, daughter of Thomas Kennedy and Elizabeth Lane Gordon.
Thomas J. Buford had seven children; the last four being definitely by his second wife. The children, in order of birth were: Mary Elizabeth Buford Rhea, James Thomas Buford, Sarah Louise Buford Goodwin, Frank Giddens Buford, William Wallace Buford, Annie Gordon Buford Dickerson, and Edward Buford. He lived in Mississippi in early manhood; then returned to Giles County and engaged in farming in Lynnville. He was the first president of the Nashville and Decatur Railroad. He served in the General Assembly of Mississippi, before returning to TN. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
