Mahala Jane Burt was born about 1841, in Livingston County, Missouri, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Burt. Mahala Jane Burt married William S. Truitt (spelled Truett) on our Family Marriage Certificate as handed down to me, Cathi Truitt Steffens, by my father John T. Truitt, along with his brother, Charles Truitt. All of this has been kept within our direct Family line. Mahala and William were married on December 18, 1858 in Woodford County, Illlinois. William and Mahala had three sons, John Aaron Truitt, Wiliam A. Truitt and James C. Truitt by 1865. The 1860 US Census Records have the family living in Washington, Tazewell County, Illinois, taken June 1, 1860. As of the 1870 US Census, it shows William and Mahala with their three sons, residing in Spring Bay, Woodford County, Illinois taken June 5, 1870. On March 24, 1879, Mahala Jane (Burt) Truitt died at the age of 38, according to the Peoria County Records. She was survived by her husband William S. Truitt, and sons, John Aaron Truitt, William A. Truitt and James C. Truitt.
