Widow Lela Fay (Cox) Bolen lived in the family farmhouse west of Ober, Indiana, with her son Joe Bolen, Joe's wife Eve and their baby daughter, Joy Bolen, who was born December 1940. About January 1941, the house burned to the ground. Joe and Eve went out for the first time after Joy's birth. Grandma Bolen was babysitting. The fire started. Grandma carried Joy out in a basket of dirty clothes—all that was saved. Joe and Eve, with Joy, then lived in "the little house" about 100 yards west of the burned house before the new house was built. The "little house" had a dirt floor and no plumbing. Grandma Bolen never lived in the new houes. Grandma Bolen got an apartment in town, Knox, Indiana, next door to where she later lived. The house is still there (2012) on Washington Street, south side of the street, 1st block east of Route 35, Knox, Starke County, Indiana. GPS location of the house is N 41.29841 W 86.62003.
