George was born in England, the son of William Bean and his wife Mary Eden. He was christened in Holme Upon Spalding Moor, Yorkshire on September 5, 1830. He immigrated with his family in 1836 or 1837, sailing from Hull for Quebec on the ship "New Harmony". He and his family lived in Sodus, Wayne County, NY until October of 1841 when they moved to Geneva, Ontario County, NY.
By 1854, he was living in Buffalo, working as a tinsmith for J. Otto & Co.
He married Esther Reed on January 16, 1857 at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Buffalo. Their first child, Mary Ella, was born c. 1858. Their second child, Georgia, was born on November 5, 1859.
By 1870, George owned a copper, tin & sheet iron works, with partners. After his death, his wife Esther inherited his share of the business. Both of his children predeceased him.
