Came to Casper 24 years ago

George Irwin Berry, 69, 731 Badger, died Monday evening at his home following a long illness.

A resident of Casper since 1922, Mr. Berry was an engineer for the Mountain States Power Co. from that year until his retirement in May of 1946.

Because of a crippled left hand, the result of an accident a number of years ago, Mr. Berry was led into a hobby that was as practical as it was interesting.

The hobby, which gained the Casperite widespread fame, consisted of fashioning all sorts of kitchen utensils from scrap metals. The collection even includes a combination knife and fork, which was mighty useful to a man with a crippled left hand.

Mr. Berry was born May 9, 1977 at Dutch Hill, Penna. He was the fifth of 11 children.

In 1909 he married Sara McMasters at Junction City, Ohio, and started in the soil industry working in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Ohio before coming to Casper in 1922.

He was a member of Lodge No. 22, I.O.O.F., Enterprise Encampment No. 9, The Casper Canton No. __ of Patriarchs Militant, the W.L. Kukendall Rebekah Lodge No. 39, and was an honorary member of Local 127, CIO Elecrtrical Workers.

Survivors include his wife, Sara, and a daughter, Wilda, both of 731 Badger, and a niece, Ruth Evans Hutchinson, Kan.

Other survivors include three brothers, Harry H. Berry, Sr., Greybull; John Berry and Pryor Berry, both of Petrolia, Penna. Three sisters, Mrs. E. E. Renner, Detroit; Mrs. Alma Neill, and Mrs. James Espy, of Butler, Penna.

Tentative funeral arrangements have been made with rites scheduled for Friday at the Bustard funeral home. The Rev. Charles Hardesty, of First Methodist church, will conduct the services. Special rites will be conducted by Lodge No. 22, I.O.O.F. Interment will be made in the I.O.O.F. plot in Highland Cemetery.
