LOCAL AND PERSONAL

Walter Bailey, the eight-year-old son of James Bailey of Boyne City, was drowned in Boyne River Sunday afternoon. He and his brother Wilbur were on the bridge, when Walter slipped on a board and fell into the river, where he was carried under the ice in the rapid current. Efforts were made to recover the body through the ice, but have been given up as hopeless till the ice breaks up in the spring.

ANOTHER SAD ACCIDENT
By Which A Little One Loses His Life By Drowning.

We have this week to record another tragedy whereby a little life was lost. Mr. James Bailey, the millwright at W.H. White & Co’s mill, was engaged in making some repairs there last Sunday, and not having time to go home to procure his supper, his two little boys came to bring it to him. Afterwards in childish curiosity they were wandering round the river bank, near the mouth, when in some unknown manner, Walter, aged 6 years, slipped into the icy water, and before the screams of the other child brought help, he had disappeared under the ice. The body was recovered Monday in about twenty feet of water.

The funeral, which was largely attended, was held Tuesday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church, and the remains were interred in the village cemetery. Numerous and beautiful floral offerings attested the sympathy of the entire community.

Mr. and Mrs. Bailey are comparative strangers here, having moved here from Canada in November last.
