Raymond B. Allen born October 4, 1928 in Greene County, Indiana to Benjamin Homer and Edith Marie Bridges Allen, both deceased. Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Sue Ella Sybert Allen; three children, a son, Raymond B. Allen, Jr., M. D. and wife Lorie, a daughter, Rebecca Lynne Anthony and husband, David, a stepson, Frederick M. Ritter III and wife, Barbara; five grandchildren, David Lane and wife, Samantha, Tyler Barrett, Annabelle Anthony, Abigail Anthony, Matthew Allen; and two step grandchildren Chris Ritter and Marsha Brown; three great grandchildren Ava Claire Lane and Isla Raelyn Lane, Weslyn Benjamin Lane, as well as two step-great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Brown and Kaleb Brown. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold W. Allen and a sister, Mildred Genieva Allen.
Mr. Allen retired as a Commander, U. S. Navy, in 1975 having honorably served his country in both the enlisted and officer ranks during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam for thirty years. After retirement from the military Mr. Allen worked as a Vice President for QED in the Tidewater area and Italy for seventeen years.
He was an active volunteer for many years with local groups such as Hospice, Meals on Wheels, the Museum of the Albemarle and the Arts of the Albemarle. For approximately eight years he wrote a humor column for the Daily Advance in Elizabeth City.
He was a member of the Community Church of the Resurrection and formerly attended the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
A celebration of his life with military honors by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post #6060 will be held Monday, December 31, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1259 US 17 South, Elizabeth City. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the veterans section of West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Elizabeth City.
