Maria Jane Phillips, daughter of Sergeant John Phillips of the 11th Regiment of Foot and Maria Jane Campbell, was born at the Cumberland Square Barracks, Stoke Damerel, Devonshire, on Nov. 23, 1840. She married Sgt. George E. Cole of the Royal Engineers, and their daughter Rachel Sarah Cole was born at Woolwich, Kent, England, 24 July 1862. Maria Jane and her daughter Rachel Cole immigrated on the S.S. John Bright on 15 Aug 1864, following George Cole who came to enlist in the U.S. Civil War. George abandoned his wife and daughter in 1867; his wife Maria Jane Cole was buried in a pauper's grave in Cambridge, Mass., and their daughter Rachel Sarah Cole was adopted by Charles and Sarah Moore Goddard, and her name changed to Lucy Sarah Goddard.
