Mabel was but a young child of less than 2 years when she and her three siblings caught scarlet fever during the scarlet fever epidemic that struck Milwaukee around the 1880 mark. She and her sister, Mary, did not survive. They are buried beside one another and share the stone marking their death.
Their brother, John, survived but did not live to be an old man. Their sister, Hypatia, survived, but became deaf as a result of the scarlet fever.
