Son of Theodore Avery and Martha Driver. He was born near Austin, Minnesota and was a graduate of the Austin high school and business college. For a time he was employed in Duluth as a street car motorman and later operated a garage with Henry Wood at Howard Lake. He married Clara B. Wood on December 1, 1915 in Stearns County, Minnesota. They resided at Eden Lake Township of Stearns County, Minnesota. Chester and Clara Avery operated the Cedar Lawn Berry farm and store widely known as Avery's Corners. It was a place of beauty with its spacious lawns, lovely flowers and trees as well as the berries and an artificial lake attracted visitors from Spring to Fall. For a number of years Mr. Avery operated two threshing rigs and farmers for miles around became his friends through this work. He also served for years on the Eden Lake town board and on the Dist. 77 school board for several terms, as clerk.

We was survived by his wife, and a sister Mrs. Grace Danley of Tacoma, Washington.
