Bob was born in Houghton, Kansas to Jess Willard "Bill" Marquis and Wilma Ellen (Blackford) Marquis. He had a Bachelor's of Arts degree from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. He served in the US Air Force at the end of the Korean War. He was in the Intelligence Unit. During that time he became seriously ill and was hospitalized for a very long time. As a result of the illness he became legally blind. He went to four years at Washburn University while blind.
He went on to get a specialized degree in nursing to work with the mentally handicapped. He worked at a state mental hospital in Winfield, Kansas for over fifteen years. While there he suffered a serious back injury and never worked again except he did have a reflexology business for a short time.
He was married twice. He and his first wife, Julie Levin Marquis had a daughter Geraldine Marquis born April 25, 1969.
He married Ruth Kerns on June 16, 1987. They divorced circa 1998.
