He was born 19 Mar 1844 in Schwabstedt, Schleswig, Germany the oldest of Han's 10 children by 3 different wives.
On 31 Mar 1866 he departed Hambug, Hamburg, Germany for New York, New York, USA. Arriving in America on 5 Apr 1866 for immigration. He left there and went to Davenport, Scott, Iowa and set up a butcher shop there. Staying only 9 months he moved to Newton Jasper.
He started what would be a successful butcher shop he started purchasing land there. He would be come a large land owner.
He sent money back to his family in Germany so that four of his siblings could come to America.
On 1 Oct 1868 he married Mary W Klopping. She also was a
German imigrant. She would be his supporter in his personal and business affairs.
He was a very successful butcher and farmer in Jasper County.
