Stephen Brayton is the author of the BRAYTON FAMILY RECORD, "According to the recollection of Stephen Brayton, given in August, 1876."
FROM BRAYTON FAMILY RECORD:
"I, Stephen Brayton, the oldest son but fourth child, was born March 17, 1797 in Hadley, NY, having five sisters and three brothers. Just after coming of age I accompanied my father to Bethany, NY where, in December 26, 1819, I married Harriet Salinda Lincoln. She was born in Castleton, VT, August 12, 1798. My occupation, tanning and shoemaking.
My wife's grandparents lived in Tauton, MA, where her parents, Sylvester Lincoln and Deborah Briggs, were born and married. Five years after the Hubbardtown battle they moved to Castleton, Rutland County, VT and in 1803 to Bethany, NY. Occupation, farming. Her father died in Bethany, July 11, 1819, aged 61, but her mother lived to the ripe age of 99 and died in Mayville, NY.
From Bethany we moved to Harmony, Chautauqua County, NY in 1827, and engaged in farming, tanning and currying, and in shoemaking. We moved to Lowville, Columbia County, Wisconsin in 1844, and in addition to farming we soon opened a hotel and store. Here I served a term as County Treasurer, and held some town offices. In 1857 we moved to Poynette, in the same county, and in partnership with another man opened a village store. In May 1871, we removed to Navarro Ridge, Mendocino County, California to live near our son Edwin. Resumed again the trade of shoemaking to occupy unemployed time.
I joined the Baptist Church in Vermont when 19 years old, but united with the M.E. Church while in Harmony, NY, of which I am still a member. My wife experienced religion when only 15, and joined the Baptist Church in Bethany, NY when about 23, but went with me in the Methodist.
Note: Stephen BRAYTON is the father of Edwin BRAYTON (Find A Grave Memorial # 30157010).
