Chester Kenneth Bender, son of Henry H. and Theresa (Ehrlich) Bender, was born Sept. 5, 1927, in Russell County, KS. His death occurred on Feb. 2, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS after several months of failing health. His age was 57 years, 4 months, and 27 days.
Chet, as all his friends knew him, lived nearly all his life in the Russell area, received his basic education in the rural elementary school near the family farm home northwest of Russell, and graduated from Russell High School. During the Korean Conflict, Chet served in the U.S. Army with overseas duty in Germany. After his honorable discharge from military service, he returned to the Russell community and for a shor period of time, Chet lived on the family farm.
On June 3, 1956, he was united in marriage to Generose Denning at Ellsworth, KS, and they made their home in Russell. This union was blessed with three children: Susan, Patrick, and Lori. After this union was dissolved, Chet devoted his life to his children, giving them much caring and love. To those who knew and loved him, this was Chet - loving and caring.
Through his formative years on the farm, he grew to love the land and its feel. Lately this love was shared with his family and friends through "The Tomato Patch" and as an avid fisherman, he passed this joy on to his only son, Patrick.
For many years he was employed by Sanders Tank Service. For the past 15 years, he was employed by the Shields Oil Producers. His knowledge and experience in the oil fields made him a valued employee.
Chet was a member of St. John Lutheran church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6240 and of the American Legion, all of Russell.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry H. Bender.
