James 'Richard' Coffman was the sixth of seven children born to William Coffman and his first wife, Nancy (Brown) Coffman. His oldest brother died as an infant. He had four sisters and one brother.

His father remarried, Mary Elizabeth Standlee and they had eight children. Four of these children died in the Typhoid Epidemic in 1902.

Richard's Father:
William Harrison 'Will' Coffman (1831-1903)
Will born in Kentucky and migrated to Milam County, Texas where he and his wife had thier children. In Texas, he served as Justice of the Peace, County Commissioner, and was a Texas State Representative in the 18th Legislature. He was also an officer in the Confederate army.

Richard's Mother:
Nancy Cordelia (Brown) Coffman (1832-1875)
Nancy was Will's first wife and was born in Hopkins County, Kentucky and migrated to Texas with her husband shortly after their marriage. Nancy's four great grandfathers were Revolutionary War Patriots. Richard is a descendant, through his mother, of Thomas Pettus who served as a Burgess in the House of Burgess along side of Patrick Henry, Thomas Jeferson and George Washington.
