Born in Hinds County, Mississippi to John Covington Thomas and Sarah (Terrell) Bownds. Jane's father, John fought in The War of 1812. He also served as a Mississippi State Senator and Representative.
Jane's grandparents were:
Stephen Thomas (1765-1825) was a Revolutionary War Patriot. At age 16, he fought in the Battle of Eutaw Springs (SC) where he was injured when a musket ball broke his thigh bone.
Mary Covington (1766-1825) was a twin and the daughter of Revolutionary Patriot, John Covington.
Edward Young Terrell (1765-1833) was a Revolutionary War Patriot. He was only 17 years old when he served in the war and a story about his bravery was written in a journal by a neighbor.
Artilissa Stephens (1768-1811), her mother wrote in a document that her first husband (Artilissa's father), John Stephens, was killed by Indians.
Jane married Berry Bownds, son of John Bownds and Mary Saphronia "Polly" (Cooley) Bownds in 8 August 1850. By 1880, Jane, Berry and family had moved to Milam County, Texas where Berry was a farmer. They resided in Milam County the rest of their life. Both are buried in Mesquite Cemetery in Lee County, TX.
