Obituary of T. F. Hayes
Theodore Freeling Hayes was born August 11, 1844, in Indiana, and died Jan 8, 1920, aged 75 years, at his home in Woodburn, Oregon. When 6 years of age, he, with his parents, crossed the plains with an ox team. After a long and tedious journey of nearly four months they arrived in Oregon in August, 1852. During this trip his father died, leaving his mother with five small children, making it necessary for him to earn his livelihood while a young boy. When 14 years of age he began working out, devoting but three months in the winter to school. In __2 he went to the gold mines in Florence, Idaho. For several years he followed the pursuit of mining there and at Boise, Idaho. In 1864 he purchased his mother's donation land claim near Mt Angel, where he resided until 1888, when he sold this place and bought another farm near Woodburn. Having retired from farming in 19__ he moved to Woodburn, where he since resided. For 22 years he served as justice of the peace and eecuted the duties of this office with skill and integrity. Mr. Hayes spent a useful and well ordered life, and his services not only to his mother and family, but also to the community in which he resided, are beyond estimation. In 1869 he was married to Miss Mary J Brown and to this union four children were born--Henry M Hayes, Vancouver, Wash.; Cynthia R. Robbins, Oregon City, Or.; Leona G. Hendricks, Portland, Or.m and Addie L. Doud, of this city. One sister, Mrs. E. J. McCulloch of Baker, Or., a brother, H.T. Hayes of this vicinity and eight grandchildren survive him.
Interment was in Belle Passi Cemetery Friday afternoon, Jan. 9, services being held at the grave.
