Mrs. Hattie Applen passed away Friday Feb. 6, 1948 at 1:30 p. m. at her home in Lime Springs, Iowa. Her entire life had been spent in York township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. Death occurred to relieve an illness which had made Mrs. Applen bedfast since Thanksgiving time. During her illness, she was tenderly cared for by her family. She was aged 72 years and 6 days. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, Feb. 9. At the Saetersdal Lutheran Church near York of which Mrs. Applen was a member. The pastor, Rev. David M. Bey, preached on the text. Romans 8:18: "For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us" Mrs. Theodore Ivers and Mrs. David M. Beys sang, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Olaf Borgan, "The Ola Rugged Cross," "God Will Take Care of You," and "Abide With Me." The sons-in-law of the deceased acted as pallbearers. Burial was at Saetersdal cemetery. The following obituary was read at the funeral:
Mrs. Henry Applen, nee Hattie Hovey, was born January 31, 1876 in York Township, Minnesota, the daughter of Knute and Julia Hovey. She was united in marriage on Dec. 24, 1895 to Henry Applen. Eight children were born to this union , including Mr. Esten Applen, Mrs. Marvin Jones, Mrs. Arleigh Dunlap, Mrs. Earl Barker, Mrs. Geo. Stiles, Mrs. Geo. Lovell, Mrs. Orval Vickroy, and Miss Gurena Applen. Her husband, three sisters, and two brothers preceded her in death. She is survived by her four sisters and three brothers, her eight children, and 11 grandchildren. May the Lord blessed her memory.
