Birth: Sep. 15, 1835
Randolph County
Missouri, USA
Death: Dec. 27, 1909

Rev. James Bradley was born in Dark's Prairie, northwest of Huntsville, Missouri. He taught school in that county for several years until 1861 when the Civil War broke out and he enlisted in Gen. He served throughout the war with distinction having been engaged in 23 battles, some of which were the most important during the war. He wed Martha E. "Bettie" Baker on January 14, 1866, and they were the parents of six children, one died in infancy. He was ordained a minister in the Primitive Baptist Faith in 1868 and traveled a "circuit ministry", until moving to Mexico, Missouri and preaching there until his death. He was a member of the Missouri Legislature in 1897 & 1898 and was Chaplain of the Missouri Senate in 1899. For many years he edited and published the Regular Baptist in Mexico, Missouri. He was the author of a book, "The Confederate Mail Carrier" about his experiences in the war, the principal carrier being a former comrade-in-arms, Capt. A.C. Grimes. Rev. Bradley was survived by his wife, Bettie, and six children: Miss Mary Mayer Bradley (who was living with her parents, later Mrs. F.P.Forward), Mrs.M.L.Heifner of Macon, Richard A. and Isaac C. Bradley of Ft.Collins, Colorado, and Mrs.J.M.Ryals of Clifton Hill, along with a son Arthur Lee Sutton of Macon. The funeral services were conducted from the residence at ten o'clock Wednesday morning. Interment was made in Elmwood Cemetery with the Masons officiating at the cemetery, Rev. Bradley having been a member of that order for many years.
