James Abner Daniel Sheffield ~ 1858-1903 ~ son of John Calhoun Sheffield and Susan Reed. James was born in Early County Georgia. James came to Texas by wagon train with his father and mother and other siblings in 1874. On his drawn portrait it says he was born in Trinity, which is incorrect.
From the writings of Great-Aunt Mollie his daughter:
James, better known as Jim was a handsome brunette, having dark dancing eyes and beautiful curly hair. He wore a mustache in his young manhood, as was the custom in those days. Jim possessed an aggressive, dynamic personality and was one of quick action and decision. He was daring and unafraid of friend or foe. Jim was fond of people and very friendly toward everyone, especially the children.
Jim had a creative mind. He invented a turning plow and sweep and secured a U.S. patent on it, however, he did not try to sell the patent. He had a great insight into the future. Long before anyone attempted to fly planes, he told his family that during the twentieth century, men would be flying through the air like birds.
In his late thirties Jim's health began to fail. He was ill for several years. Because of the large family very little had been saved for the dark days. Consequently, the cattle, horses, mules, piano and other valuables were sold to defray the hospital and doctor bills. He passed away at the age of forty-four, leaving Mary with six small children, the baby was under two years of age.
The Sheffield Family appears in the Book Trinity Family Beginnings a historical book on the original settlers of Trinity County, Texas.
