Robert H. Allerton was a capitalist and philanthropist based in Chicago, Illinois who also had homes in Piatt County, Illinois (which he donated to the University of Illinois and which is known as Robert Allerton Park) and the island of Kauai, Hawaii (now known as Allerton Gardens, part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden). He died at age 91 in a hospital on Kauai, Hawaii. His ashes were scattered on Kawai Bay near his house on Kauai. He never married and had no children. In 1951 he legally adopted as his son his longtime companion John Wyatt Gregg (1899-1986; Findagrave memorial #126265597).
