Helena was the third of seven children born to Jonas and Marit Nielsen, and the first born on American soil. When she was a young child, her parents moved from Wisconsin, where they had initially settled upon arrival from Norway, to Mower County, Minnesota. There, they were among the first settlers. Their food and clothing came from their farm animals and the vegetables they grew. A school building was newly constructed about the time Helena was ready to start school. According to her younger sister, Berte's recollection, this school was a 2 to 3 mile walk from their home.

Helena married Ole Broughton in 1874. He had been living in Lyon County, Minnesota since 1871. They began their married life there. They had 10 children, most of whom are in the picture at right. Only 4 of the 10 married and only two of those 4, Anetta and Julia, had children.
