ACCIDENT DEATH TOLL MOUNTS AS THREE DIE AFTER CRACK-UP
Young Men from Winn Struck While Assisting Occupants of Stalled Car; Prosecutor finds No Grounds for Court Action
The Dead
Wendall Raymond,21,Winn
Cleo Himebaugh,21,Winn
Bernard Barker,21,Winn
The Injured
Elizabeth Snyder,20, Remus-Fractured nose, cuts and bruises
John Meyer,23, Mt Pleasant R.F.D. 2- Minor bruises
Three deaths grew out of an accident which took place on M-20 nine miles east of here Sunday morning-a tragedy which occurred ironically because of the kindness of the three who have since died. Prosecutor Lynn W. Ferris in deciding that there would be no criminal action of any kind declared Wednesday that his investigation showed this to be an extremely unfortunate mishap for which no one could particularly be blamed. Dr. C.M. Baskerville, coroner, after investigation, has decided no inquest will be necessary.
Three automobiles were involved. John Lueber, 30 year old Isabella farmer, had mechanical trouble with his car. The three youths from Winn stopped near Deerfield Center to aid him. They pushed his car three miles when their own ran out of gas. They were arranging for the syphoning of gas from the Lueber car to their own when the auto driven by Meyer crashed into the two cars, trapping the three youths. Miss Snyder was riding with Meyer. They told State Trooper Snider and other investigators they could not see the two cars in time to avoid the crash.
The injured were rushed into Mt. Pleasant, Miss Snyder being treated at Northway clinic and the youths being taken to the McArthur-Strange hospital. Meyer was given first aid, while Lueber was not injured. Raymond died a few hours after being admitted. Himebaugh was the second to die, his death coming less than 24 hours later. Barker survived until 3:30 Wednesday morning, although his condition was critical at all times. All had their left legs severed at the knee and had suffered severe internal injuries. Bernard Barker had been working on the farm of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Barker. Cleo Himebaugh had been home only two days before the accident. Previously he had been working in Grand Rapids. His funeral took place Monday. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. William Himebaugh. Mr. Himebaugh is owner of the Winn-Weidman telephone exchange. Mrs. Himebaugh was operating the switchboard when she learned of her son's death in consquence of a call state police put though to Lennie Raymond, father of Wendell.
Wendell Raymond was employed as an assistant to a Winn electrician. His funeral took place Tuesday at the home of his parents in Winn.
