Daniel M. Oppenhiemer, orginally born in Germany and settled in Rusk County, Texas. He, along wth his brother began a company together in a banking house. When the civil war broke out, he enlisted in the 10th Regiment of the Texas Cavalry. During his service, he was promoted to the rank of Captain and was eventually captured and became a prisoner of war. Captain Oppenheimer received battle wounds and was released at the end of the civil war.
Returning to Texas, Daniel re-joined his brother and started up his bankning business in San Antonio, Texas. Together, the Oppenheimer brothers amassed large amounts of ranchland, one ranch comprised of 110,000 acres of land in McMullen and Atascosa Counties.
