Samuel, referred to as Charles in many newspapers of the time, was a grocer in Independence, IA. He married Elizabeth in September 1894. Those who knew him well grew concerned that he was insane and arranged a dinner party for 20 Jan 1895 at which a physician would be in attendance. This physician had it as one of his aims to evaluate Samuel surreptitiously as to his sanity. Samuel and Elizabeth did not appear at the dinner and folks grew concerned. They went to the Andersons' house and found Samuel dead with his throat slit and his wife near death with her throat slit and her head battered by a flat iron. She lingered for almost two weeks before succumbing to her injuries.
