|Birth: ||Dec. 16, 1931|
|Death: ||Jun. 4, 2012|
On Monday June 4, 2012 at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, beloved wife of Douglas C. Binney who preceded her in death, wonderful sister of Jean and Sue, dear mother to three children Rebecca, Bruce and Blair, and cherished grandmother to Sydney, Bruce, Eliza, Madeline, Jonathan, Erin, Robert and Bekah.
Peg was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on December 16, 1931, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Simmons. As the daughter of a USDA soil scientist, she grew up traveling extensively and by the time she was in seventh grade had made 29 moves and attended 15 different schools. After completion of tenth grade in Guatemala, where she also met her future husband Douglas, Margaret returned to the United States alone and completed high school at McKinley Technology High School in Washington DC. Margaret attended the University of Maryland and earned a degree in geography, and subsequently was employed in the map department of the Johns Hopkins University Operations Research Department from 1953 to 1955.
On May 14, 1955, Margaret married USMC 1st Lt Douglas Craig Binney (USNA '53) in Coronado, California, and thus began a career as a USMC wife and mother which included moves to Quantico VA, Annapolis MD, Camp Pendelton CA, Atlanta GA, Bethesda MD, Camp Lejeune NC, San Juan PR and ultimately to Alexandria VA in 1973, where she and Doug purchased the house in which she lived until her death. Her three children were born within eleven months in 1957-1958 (do the math) and as a result Margaret was in effect the mother of triplets, a challenge which she met with grace, love, humor and the consummate attention to detail for which she is famous.
As soon as all three children had graduated from Fort Hunt High School and were in college, Margaret began post-graduate studies at George Washington University, earning a degree of Masters of Public Administration in 1998. She then began a ten year career at the Environmental Protection Agency, serving as a budget analyst in the Superfund program. During this time she and Doug traveled extensively until Doug's death in 1999.
Margaret had a great love of life and enjoyed camping, hiking, sailing, and horseback riding, and she especially enjoyed time spent at the family cottage on Clear Lake in Big Rapids Michigan. Margaret will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband,
