Sister Jeanne Marie Bendik, a Dominican Sister of San Rafael, died July 28. She was 70.
Sister Bendik taught in several schools throughout the Bay Area and in Reno, Nev., including Sacred Heart School in San Francisco and Our Lady of Mercy School in Daly City. She was the founding principal of St. Isabella's School in Terra Linda in 1962. From 1965 to 1972 she served as the supervisor of schools for the congregation. She then returned to St. Isabella's School, where she served as the principal until she retired in June.
Sister Bendik served as a fellow of the Institute for Development of Educational Activity, as one of the two females among 100 school administration participants. She also served on the National Committee for the Dominican Education Association, representing Catholic elementary schools on the West Coast.
During the summers of 1996 and 1997, she served as a "volunteer missionary" in the Czech and Slovak republics, teaching English to young people.
She is survived by her brothers, John, Joseph and Tom Bendik; Sister Helen Bendik, O.P.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Dominican Sisters Center, 1520 Grand Ave., San Rafael. A burial will be at St. Dominic Cemetery in Benicia on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
