Henry Schiller was born in Paderborn in Germany in 1841. Around the age of 18 he left Germany and made the trip to America. In the early 1860s, Henry arrived in San Francisco, California. Most settlers at that time were attracted to the lure of gold and a lot of Jews settled in the gold rush county supplying miners with goods and mining supplies. Henry was one of them but surprisingly he chose to be a minor. We know that Henry had no family in the United States and therefore unlike many Jews who emigrate to California, he had no family support which would have made difficult for him to settle as a merchant. On the 7th of January 1863, a volunteer officer illegally enrolled Henry for a period of three years in the Company A of the second regiment of California. According to Robert Levinson ("The Jews in the California gold rush") he was the only Jew resident of the gold rush country to have been implicated in the civil war. He started his function at the Presidio and in February 1864 he was sent to Fort Miller on extra duty. On the 15th of August 1864, he was appointed Lance Corporal then one year later Sergeant of his regiment. He was mostly based at the Presidio doing recruiting and diverse tasks. Henry endured several stay at the hospital for unknown sickness leading for him to be declared disable. He is mustered out of service in November 1865. Back to his civil life, he opened a shop in San Francisco as a junk dealer and met his wife Yetta Hechheimer. They married on the 29th of December 1872 and rapidly their two children Max in 1874 and Miriam in 1875 were born.
Henry was an amateur of poetry; he wrote numerous poems in his journal and published several of them in some German speaking newspapers. Unfortunately his journal does not give any indication about Henry's early life neither than the name of his parents. He wrote all his poems in English showing that he was a literate person and probably came from a literate background. His children became really successful in their lives Max being chief inspector for the San Francisco Health Council and Miriam marrying Henry Joe Isaacs. His granddaughter Loraine married Emmanuel Stolaroff creator of the Neutrogena brand, and gave her name to the first eyelashes ever imported in America, Martha Loraine.
