Richard Eugene (Gene) Adkins, born on February 4, 1922 in Bakersfield, California. During World War II, he served as First Lieutenant in the 8th Air Force, 93rd Bombardment Group piloting a B-24 Liberator through 28 combat missions over Europe between September 1943 and April 1944. Gene completed the war piloting a P-51 Mustang and was released from active duty in 1946. His war years earned him the Air Medal, four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1957 with the rank of Captain. After completing his education with a Degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California, he embarked on a successful career in the energy industry. In 1987, he retired from Petrolane, Inc. as a Senior Vice President after 39 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Carol; daughter, Corey Robinson, son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Linda Adkins, Scott Adkins, granddaughter, Dawn Robinson; stepchildren, Michelle Reyes and J.C. McElroy, A. Lorraine Esterling, Gregory and Rogene Reyes and grandchildren, Michael Rosado, Andrew, Christopher and Rachel Reyes.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Sunday, January 11 at the Little-Davenport Funeral Home at 355 Dawsonville Highway in Gainesville, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a favorite charity in the name of Gene.
