John Daniel went by Dan and was born around Leonard, Texas.

John Daniel Carter son of John Hamilton Carter and Eda Ann Feagan married Lillie Biggerstaff daughter of Brice Austin Biggerstaff and Mary Tom Boyd on July 10, 1910 in Grayson Co., Texas. Because Lillie's father did not think she was old enough to marry, Lillie and John were married in secret by the Justice of the Peace in a horse drawn buggy . Lillie was 19, John was 22. Then Lillie returned home living with her parents, until she was outed by the Justice when he congratulated Brice on Lillie's marriage when he saw Brice in town.

Lillie and John had one son Howard Paul Carter born Sept 3, 1917 in Whitewright, Grayson Co., Texas, died Oct 10, 2006 in Houston, Harris Co., Texas

Dan and Lillie were divorced April 19, 1926, remarried July 31, 1926, and divorced again on January 28, 1938.

As an adult Dan was a section hand on the Cottonbelt Railroad. Lillie did the cooking for the workers and they lived in a large railroad owned boarding house, in Wolfe City(Hunt or Hopkins County). After this he worked for the Inurban, and then the flour mills in Sherman. The summer after Howard graduated from high school he lost his job because of cutbacks due to the Depression. Dan & Howard mowed grass and vacant lots for the city. Dan went to work selling extracts and spices, door to door for Blair Co. Because of the Depression and the fact that he had been injured, he had difficulty getting work. On the advice of an attorney, he sued his former employer, but he did not benefit from this suit, since anything he did win, went to the attorney.

Dan married his second wife Clara M. Brown Conarroe July 13, 1940 in Houston Co., Texas. Dan & Clara were living in Lovelady, Houston Co., Texas when he ate some bad fruit that caused him to die from an obstructed bowel at the age of 54, on Aug 1, 1942. His death was unexpected and the result of unusual circumstances. According to his son, Howard, the doctor said Dan had eaten a green pear and swallowed a big chunk due to having had teeth removed and not replaced. The doctor contended that Dan had a tapeworm which locked around the chunk of pear and killed him. He died of obstruction of the bowel. There is some question as to the competency of this doctor and the accuracy of this statement. His first wife Lillie would not remarry until after Dan's untimly death.

Some years after his death and burial in Antioch Cemetery, at the Baptist Church close to Lovelady, Texas, his son, Howard, arranged to have his body moved to Sherman, Texas. Unfortunately, when they tried to do the exhumation they could not locate Dan's grave. Due either to inaccurate records, or coffin deterioration they were unable to locate his remains. A stone was place as a memorial at the location of the presumed burial.

Dan was a wonderful person, a great father and much loved by his family and missed by all.
