"Theodore Bateman"
Written by his grandson, Chester Bateman [a son of Harvey Carl Bateman].
"Theodore Bateman was born near Zanesville, OH on Jan. 18, 1845. He moved with his parents to Rock Island, IL,where he lived until enlisting in the army in the Civil War. He enlisted Feb. 24, 1865 as a private, Co. E, 28 Illinois Infantry; discharged Feb. 24, 1866 at Brownsville, Texas. Theodore Bateman was in Co. I, 28th ILL Infantry, 13th Army Corps, General Ritter commanding. her served in Alabama, Louisiana and Texas. He was on the battle line in Mobile, AL, and one and a half miles away at the time of the blowing up of the magazine in a fort when so many negroes were killed."

"After leaving the war, he came to Barton County in 1867. He purchased 160 acres from a land speculator who scoured the land from the county. The area of Barton County was known as swampland. Theodore paid 3 dollars an acre for the land. He determined which 160 acres to buy by riding a horse over an area of the prairie. He picked land where the prairie grass was as high as a person's hand when he was on horseback; also land where there was little waste and on high round. He paid for it with money received when he was mustered out of the army."

"Theodore married Sarah Elizabeth McDowell of Moniteau Co, MO. They were married Dec. 7, 1869 by J. W. McDowell, a minister. They then came to Barton Co, MO to live on the farm that Theodore owned, 8 miles NE of Lamar. They lived on the farm until 1910, when they retired and moved to Lamar, MO. They raised a family of five children:

"Lillie Mae Bateman, born March 9, 1871;
Laura E. Bateman,born 1875;
Loula Semantha Bateman, born Sept. 19, 1878;
Lenora Ethel Bateman, born 1882;
Harvey Carl Bateman, born June 11, 1886." [In handwriting, the words, 'My father,' with an arrow pointing to Harvey.]

"Theodore Bateman's father's name was Elijah Bateman, and his mother's name, Elmina (Bainter) Bateman. His father was born in PA and his mother near Zanesville, OH."

"Elizabeth McDowell Bateman's father's name was John W. McDowell. He was born Nov. 26, 1814 in TN or KY. He died Oct. 24, 1870 in Moniteau Co, MO. Her mother's name was Eleanor (Clark) McDowell. She was born in TN on Dec. 15, 1814; died in Moniteau Co, MO on Nov. 20, 1895. Elizabeth's father, John W. McDowell, being a minister, married Theodore and Elizabeth."
