Donald Lee Beman was born on June 30, 1924 to Fred Delmar and Cora Belle Lansing Beman in the sod house on the family homestead. He was the 10th of 11 children. Don attended Schlegel School through the 8th Grade. As a young man he worked on several ranches and played mandolin in the family band.
In November, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army and trained in Camp Beale, CA, and later Camp Bowie, TX. He was deployed to the European Theater as a member of Gen. George S. Patton's 3rd Army, 13th armored division, Combat Command B, Headquarters Company, where he served as a tank driver for Col. Holt, the commanding officer. After the war, Don returned to Valentine and married Eileen Fox Weston in 1950. They became the parents of five children, Scott, Dru, Craig, David and Bryan. Don spent his life ranching, doing construction work, and enjoying and spending time with family and friends. He and Eileen traveled extensively in the US and made two trips to Europe. The most recent was the 60th anniversary VE Day Army reunion trip in 2005. He was a private pilot; a member of the United Methodist Church; the American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Affairs; Disabled American Veterans; Sandhills Cattle Association; and University of Nebraska Beef Club.
Don is survived by his wife, Eileen; sons Scott of Lincoln; Craig (Peggy) of Ft. Myers, FL; and David of Valentine, and daughter Dru and husband Ken Sypal of Lincoln. His grandchildren include John, Joe and Catherine Sypal;Christine Sypal; Lisa Beman; and Apryl Shackelford; and his great-grandsons are Sam and Eddie Lapsley; brother, Howard Beman, and sister, Mary Schroeder, both of Valentine; many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his son, Bryan; his parents and siblings Lola, Fred Jr, Lawrence, Grace, Harry, Roy, Mildred and Walter.
