At a home along the eighth tee at Michaywe' the wind chimes sing for Jean Butler. Mrs. Butler, mother of five, grandmother of 12 and a former professional dancer, died Friday, July 17, 1992 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. She was 74.
Born in Chicago June 4, 1918, Mrs. Butler wasted no time in developing her dance talent. At the age of four, she joined the Merriel Abbott International Dancers with whom she danced fro 20 years. "The Princess of Rhythm" as one reviewer described her, danced at the Palmer House Empire Room in Chicago and was a close friend of June Taylor, who later formed her own dance troupe.
Mrs. Butler toured with the big swing bands of Eddie Duchin, Griff Williams, Freddie Martin, Xavier Cugat, Guy Lombardo, Hildegarde and Liberace. She also appeared in movies with Jack Benny, Mickey Rooney and Kay Kyser. Her travels took her to Paris, the Riviera, Rio and Mexico. She also performed for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in a grand performance in England.
It was during her dancing days in Chicago that she met a visiting American flyboy; pilot Robert Butler, whom she married in 1944. Jean and Bob raised five children, including triplets, during their 48-year marriage.
They lived in Washington, DC, Allen Park and Farmington Hills until the children were grown. In 1978, Mr. Butler retired as an executive pilot for General Motors Air Transport Division. He and Mrs. Butler moved to the Gaylord area and have been residents of Michaywe' for 14 years.
Mrs. Butler is survived by her husband, Robert H.; her children, 12 grandchildren, one sister, Shirley Weber of Locust Grove, VA; and one brother, W. Bruce Guest of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Funeral services for Mrs. Butler were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, from St. Mary Cathedral. Arrangements were through the Nelson Funeral Home, Gaylord, MI.
