Robert Vale "Bob" Kratzig, of Laurel, passed away Saturday morning, December 4, 2010. He was 88.

Born January 4, 1922 in Bellingham to Robert Anton and Evelyn (Beard) Kratzig, Bob was a lifetime Whatcom County resident. In 1923, he moved with his parents from Bellingham to forty acres on the corner of Hannegan and Hemmi Roads where they founded Kratzig Meat Company.

He attended Meridian Schools through 8th grade, at which point he left school to help with the family business. Bob continued to operate the slaughterhouse until retiring in 1981.

On June 30, 1945, Bob married his wife, Margaret Beck. They celebrated 65 years of marriage this past summer. Together they had three children: Linda, Robert B. and David.

Aside from operating a successful business, Bob was a founding member of the Laurel Fire Department, where he served for over 30 years as a fire fighter and EMT, much of that time as District #3 Fire Chief.

He was also a longstanding caretaker and commissioner of Ten Mile Cemetery, and over the last several decades could often be seen there daily, working on a variety of projects.

In his spare time, Bob enjoyed hunting, woodworking and playing cards, as well as spending time with his family. He was a recipient of a variety of awards over his lifetime, including Ten Mile Citizen of the Year and the Paul Harris Fellowship award. Bob was well-known for his impeccable character, unwavering work ethic and great personality.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and two half-siblings, Jack McPhail and Muriel (McPhail) Krechevsky.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughter, Linda Weed and husband, Ernie; son, Robert B. Kratzig and wife, Nancy; son, David Kratzig and wife, Gail; grandchildren, Ernie Weed, Kristina (Tom) Thurstonson, Brian Weed, Kelli (Mark) Holz, Karin (Adrian) Burns and Robert J. Kratzig; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Andrew Burns, Ryan and Jeremy Holz, Abigail Weed and Cole Thurstonson.

Visitation hours are scheduled for Thursday, December 9, 4 to 7 pm at Gillies Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held Friday, December 10, 1:00 pm at Laurel Community Baptist Church, 162 W. Laurel Road, preceded by private family burial.
