Evelyn Gladys Ross was the daughter of Harold and Geneva Ross and the mother of Chris Bowles. The sister of Wayne, Steve and Jerry Ross.

She was my Aunt. I was young when she passed away, but I remember her being fun. She was a RN for a short time in the 60's, but life took her in other paths. Evelyn married her first husband James Bowles on 2/11/1966 at Glover Babtist Church. She wore a lovely white dress that she bought and had it reworked fo her by grandmother(Ottice Arnold) and mother(Geneva A Ross). They had to put in a hidden zipper under the 80 pearl buttons that closed the dress up the back. It was a story Granny and G.G. told of their ability to make it look like it was buttoned but due to skill was an easy dress to put on. The photos from this wedding are fabulous with Aunt E bouffanted and her bridesmaids equally as big haired. Evelyn was goofy and always made faces in her photos in these she did as well. I remember being young and laughing with her. Her and my Granny were very close, Evelyn lived with her mother before her death. Evelyn also would come up to my house so my mom would cut her hair in her beauty shop, so I got to see her often. My most vivid memories of her include singing the song "Love Potion Number 9" in Granny's kitchen with her and when she showed me, not yet 7, how to do the "Mashed Potato" while listening to old records on the basement record player. She would also draw and color with me. Aunt E, Granny and myself would watch "Mama's Family" and "Hee-Haw" together. On more than one occasion with Papa included we would square dance on the big huge back porch.

Evelyn worked as a waitress at S&S Cafeteria and also as a clerk in a dime store. She had an enormous sweet tooth and always had pockets full of candy. She was always ready for a milkshake that Granny would prepare for us.

Aunt E was a hell raiser and did things that made a lot of people blush. She lived in excess and burnt the candle at both ends. Towards the end of her life when the sickness had drained the life from her she spent alot of time in her room sleeping, yet she would always smile at me when Granny would take me in to see her.

Although I don't have the memories of her as I do other family members I know she was sweet. I will always remember her in the polyester slacks and silky tie at the neck blouses she wore. She was a good lady and a part of my childhood I will never forget.
