Alda Blair Devine, 85 of Hillsville, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2008 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem NC. He is survived by his wife Fern L. Devine of the home; daughter & son-in-law Karen & Anthony Dunford of Fancy Gap; son & daughter-in-law Patrick & Christine Devine of Alexandria, VA; sister Mary Belle Holder of Stafford, VA; grandchildren & spouses April & Robert Harris and Kellie & Dinesh Jos; and great grandchildren Alexander Harris, Olivia Harris and Mark Jos.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Rev. Chris Carlisle officiating. Burial will follow in the Webb-Sky View Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Hillsville V.F.W. Post 1115.
Al retired after 33 years of Federal Civil Service, working for the US Army. After being discharged from the Corps he went to work for the US Army.
The last 15 years of his civilian career were spent in HQDA in the Pentagon. His last assignment was Deputy Chief of the largest office on the Army staff. The office personnel were a mixture of military [field grade officers] and civilians.
During World War II, Al was a rifleman 0311 with Golf Company 2nd Bn of the 3rd Marine Division and saw action in Bougainville from 1943-1944.
Military awards are the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II victory medal.
