Emily J. Sutton Betterton Obituary
Mrs. Gardner Betterton, an old resident of Marion County, passed away at the family home in West Knoxville, last Friday. Death resulted from many years of affliction with spinal trouble, resulting in paralysis.
Emily Jane Sutton was born in Bloomington, ILL., July 4, 1834. She removed with her parents to Iowa in May 1837, they locating at Iowaville in Van Buren County. There she was married February 5, 1864, to Gardner Betterton and they removed to Marion County in 1864, which has ever since been their home. Mr. and Mrs. Betterton resided southwest of the city until a number of years ago when, on account of advancing years and failing health, they removed to Knoxville.
Mr. and Mrs. Betterton were the parents of ten children. William died in infancy and Fred after reaching manhood. The surviving children are Obadiah J., Knoxville; Harriet C. Garrison, Villisca; Jesse E., College City, Cal.; Viola R. Woodle, Knoxville; Charles A., Woodland, Cal.; Mrs. Frances Mattox, Memphis, Tenn.; Ora, Dannebrog, Nebraska; Arthur, who made his home with his parents. Mrs. Garrison and Ora Betterton were here in their mother's last hours.
Mrs. Betterton was known and esteemed by a wide circle of friends. She had discharged the duties of wife, mother, friend, and neighbor in this community for nearly half a century, and the sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved husband and children.
Funeral services were held at the home on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Brown of the Presbyterian Church, interment at Graceland.
