Obituary from Bedford Gazette, May 29, 1908

Jacob Corley Death

That dark angel who saddens our homes and hearts, has once again claimed his own, taking from our midst our aged and respected citizen, "Uncle Jacob" Corley. Though sick but a few weeks it was evident that the end was near, the sands of time almost run, his work on earth almost finished Corley was born about two miles west of Schellsburg on July 1, 1821, and was the son of John and Elizabeth E. Corley. There were nine children in the family and Mr. Corley was the last to answer the final call. While yet young his parents removed to West End where he grew to manhood and married Miss Sarah Metzgar. To this union two children, a son, John D. of Dry Ridge, and a daughter, Louisa, wife of Solomon Diehl were born. His first wife dying, he married Miss Mary McCreary. Mr. Corley served one year in his country's defense, being in the 82nd Regiment, Co. C, and at the expiration of that time, the war having ended, was honorably discharged. His mind, until very recent years, was clear and being possessed of a good memory he was wont to recall many scenes of army life, both humorous and otherwise. He was for many years a member of the Reformed church on Dry Ridge and although deprived of attending services regularly, he did not lose interest in things spiritual. He is survived by his wife, two children, 17 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the church on Dry Ridge, conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. W. Warlick. The high esteem in which he was held was attested by the large concourse of people who came to pay the last tribute of respect to one they had known and loved. Interment in the cemetery at the church. New Buena Vista, May 26
